Tsinjoarivo-Ambalaomby

Sadabe Madagascar still has limited places available for a 4-day pre-IPS trip to the Mahatsinjo Research Station (CEEDD) to visit this unique high-altitude humid forest (some of the highest-altitude forests Madagascar has) and experience SADABE’s work with local communities (the VOI associations are actually co-managers of the protected area).

Dates: 16-19 July, with the first and last day mostly taken up by travel and sightseeing along the way)

What you would see:

  • Diademed Sifaka (one of the handful of strongholds for this critically endangered species) - the study groups that have been monitored for 22 years
  • eastern lesser Bamboo Lemur
  • Nocturnal lemurs including Woolly lemur, Sportive Lemur and Mouse Lemur (the aye-aye is around, but elusive and the dwarf lemurs will be hibernating)
  • Chameleons, birds, orchids, and other biotic elements of the high-altitude, humid ecosystem (July is not the best month for birds and herps, but they are still there!)
  • the NGO Sadabe research station and a tour highlighting conservation and development activities with local associations
  • performance by local music group in the local Merina cultural style
  • visit to Tsinjoarivo Rova - historic site of Queen’s summer palace

What you should not expect:

  • four star accommodation - it’s comfortable, but rustic! - there will be limited dormitory-style space and ample tent camping space
  • tourist crowds
  • paved roads all the way

Cost: 200 USD plus accommodation at Mahatsinjo (tent sites or guest room)
